Sitting in Washington airport having taken a few days off (after working all weekend with the project team), so finally have time to sit to write my final blog on what happened on Friday and reflect on what an amazing week it has been.
On Friday morning we all headed into NYC, and were treated to a day in the client centre at 590 Madison. We were also treated to a talk by Ethan McCarty (@ethanmcc), who spoke with such passion about his time at IBM, and especially the current work he is doing at IBM in the Marketing and Communication (M&C) labs, that it made me want to immediately move to NYC and camp out in that office!
Ethan told us that IBM were the first fortune 500 company to include RSS feeds in their website, proving that IBM was and always will be ahead of the game! He also spoke about how important preserving the IBM brand is, and for that reason they implemented an audit of social channels a couple of years ago (it’s why you see on the accounts I manage it states things like “Following IBM Social Computing guidelines” & gives the names of two people that run the account). They discovered that the IBM logo was being used by a magician and a dating site!! He emphasised that IBM does not act as wardens of their employees social channels, but just want us to aspire to be the best advocates of IBM we can be.
Then Ethan gave the most memorable quote of the week for me (as you know I work for IBM Collaboration Solutions and love our entire collaboration portfolio!) – “Innovation and collaboration are inherently bound together”. Collaborative working is going to be absolutely fundamental in our projects – we are in six different time zones on my team, but by using things like Connections and IBM Docs collaborative working is made much easier (ok plug over 🙂 ).
After the session we were lucky enough to be given a tour of the M&C labs by Ethan, which looked like such an amazing place to work, and was even better when I bumped into a colleague (and friend),Tariq Ahmad (@tariq_ahmad) that I had worked with in Orlando this January as part of Team Social at Connect (see previous blog post!). Tariq was busy working on a project so we didn’t have much time to catch up, but I was still very jealous of were he was working!
In the afternoon we gave our first group presentation, which was a little daunting, but I really really enjoyed it. The more I present the more I love it. Just need to practice as much as I can between now and July when we do the major project readouts! Our team then spent Saturday and Sunday working, and had a great team dinner out on Saturday night at a Moroccan restaurant.
The week has been incredibly hard work, but I feel like I have learnt so much both from the speakers as well as my amazing team. I really can’t wait to get back to the UK and put my new skills into practice. That being said, I will really miss my new family, and can’t wait to see them all again in July.
Remember, for the latest on the course and what else I am up to, you can follow me @RSwindell.
In other news…
As I said, I spent two days in DC and REALLY enjoyed it, I visited all the main sites and took some great pictures. Here’s a few pictures of me enjoying the sites.
